Excursion from Vilnius: Kaunas and Trakai

Individual excursion

You will be picked up from your hotel in Vilnius and driven to Kaunas. The second-largest city in Lithuania and historically a leading center of Lithuanian economic, academic and cultural life. The city inter-war architecture is regarded as one of the finest examples of the European Art Deco, and due it Kaunas is the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to be named a UNESCO City of Design.

During excursion in Kaunas you will visit the old town and its main sightseeing objects – fourteenth century Kaunas castle ruins, the Town Hall square and Cathedral, the Church of Vytautas, Perkūnas House (Thunder House), will walk through the Laisvės avenue, will visit the most famous Lithuanian composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis National art museum.

Free time for lunch and rest.

Further drive to Trakai – the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Visiting the 15th century Insular Trakai Castle housing an exhibition on prehistoric findings and the 17-18th century applied art, the way of life of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes. Excursion in Trakai and acknowledge of karaims – a people speaking the Turkic language, who have lived there since the 14th century and have preserved their traditions. The kenesa – a Karaime sanctuary – and houses of Karaimes have survived in Trakai – see them!

Free time, when you must taste karaims popular traditional dish – kybyn (a small pasty stuffed with minced meat). Also, you could take a boat trip which gives a chance to enjoy blue water and the picturesque nature surroundings!

Later, trip back to Vilnius.
